Industries at night is a body of work that depicts the harmonization of light with industrial environments: outcome of thought, design and labor. The conceptualization of this project began in summer of 2010.
Each image is composed of several exposures, from my Canon 50D. Each final rendering is a composite of ten to seventy images, allowing for meticulous and astonishing resolution in each print.
In these photos, the industry is captured in an atypical fashion. Expectedly, industrial sites are most often perceived as places swarmed by human activity and mechanically governed by production. However, when the daytime yields to the night’s sky, the industrial sites undergo a seamless reversal in atmosphere; chaos and disarray dissolve into desolation, vacancy and serenity.
I have invested countless car rides through Winnipeg and along its surroundings, seeking out particular qualities of light in industrial zones. The lights in juxtaposition with objects’ shadows generate a fascinating balance between warm and cool lighting (such as blue and cyan).
These photos advocate for the camera’s undeniable ability to outperform the human eye. The exposure’s adjustments call attention to the shadows and show us dimensions we would otherwise be incapable of seeing.
In my photography, I always strive to show the world in a new light, literally and figuratively. These images are intended to challenge the viewer’s perception of beauty by showing neglected structures in their unforeseen majesty.
