Tracy Tomchuk volunteered at the Rift Valley Children's Village in Arusha, Tanzania for the second half of 2012. With a desire to learn about a new culture, she wanted to travel but also share a fair exchange with the community in which she would live. R.V.C.V. at the time was an orphanage home to over 80 children, yet Tomchuk found a way to make it feel like one big family.
Six of every seven days she worked with the children of the orphanage and almost every night was spent playing soccer or volley ball with the locals. Her days began at 6:00am, when she prepared breakfast and gently woke the 12 girls of her particular housing complex, ages 1 – 15. She walked the older kids to school, before instructing a small grade 1 class from 8:00am until 11:00am. The afternoons were spent with the younger children playing in the yard of the village. At 4:00pm when the kids returned from school, she prepared snacks and monitored bath time. Her evenings were completely unscheduled and she usually spent time with her local friends, Musa or Gabby, comparing cultures, going for walks or playing sports.
During the very last month of Tomchuk's time in Tanzania she backpacked the Northern region and East Coast of the country. Bellow you will find photographs of the The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar Island, Moshi, her adventures with the Maassai People and Rift Valley Children's Village.
