Female Genital Mutilation Commemorative Plates
Female Genital Mutilation is a deeply rooted practice that is carried out in 28 different countries. More than 8000 girls & women undergo some type of genital mutilation every day. FGM is rarely performed by a qualified nurse or doctor and are usually done without anaesthesia or sterilisation of instruments. Death from bleeding is not uncommon, while long-term complications include chronic infections of the uterus and vagina, painful menstruation, severe pain during intercourse, sterility, and complications during childbirth. FGM can cause severe physical and psychological harm to the survivors.
Many reasons are given for the existence and the continuation of FGM, such as: history / the preservation of culture, religion, the safeguarding of virginity before marriage, preventing rape, providing a source of income for those who perform the circumcision, and for aesthetic reasons.
Most importantly, there are no medical benefits from Female Genital Mutilation.
